South Reno United Methodist Church

South Reno United Methodist Church

Full Description

South Reno United Methodist Church was officially chartered in 1989, but we were a church long before that. With people the world over, we share a longing for something and Someone much larger than ourselves; with billions around the world, we have found that our lives are richer when we seek out that Someone together. Experience has taught us that we all seek God and experience God in different ways, and so we are less a group of people who agree on the answers than a group of people who are asking the same questions.

Our mission is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Because we are a group of hundreds of different people, we do that in hundreds of different ways: through praying and worshiping together, through continual study, and through caring for and serving each other and the world. Whatever we do, we believe that we do it best by cultivating an attitude and creating a community of open hearts, open minds, and open doors.

What on earth does that mean, you ask? For us, it is both a descriptor that we try hard to live up to, and a goal that guides the work we do as individuals and as a group.

In the Gospel of John, chapter 13:34-35, Jesus says: ”And now I give you a new commandment. Love one another as I have loved you. By this, all people will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” So, in all that we do and say at SRUMC, we try to live up to this commandment. It is the reason why we do what we do, and the way that we do it. With God’s help, we strive to be as open-hearted as possible, loving and being loved more and more freely and genuinely.

As United Methodists, we are founded on the principle that we will never know all there is to know about God. We believe that study is critical to our growth in faith, as individuals and as a community. Some of us have studied the Bible for years, and others of us have never studied at all, but all of us yearn to know God, each other, and ourselves better. Though it would be MUCH easier if we all agreed on everything, we know that intelligent and faithful Christian people will sometimes differ. We have widely varying opinions on every political and religious issue, but we share a belief that our lives are better when Jesus Christ is at the center of all that we do…and we believe that sharing the Gospel by loving one another can absolutely transform the world.

SRUMC is not a warehouse to store perfect people. It is a hospital for broken ones, looking for healing and wholeness. Though human beings have never been good at accepting one another, regardless of religious affiliation — sadly, sometimes “religious” people have been the worst at it — our doors are open to everyone. It is a constant learning and growing process, this opening of doors and selves, but we believe passionately that our church must truly be a sanctuary; that is, a place of safety, rest, and love. We hope that SRUMC can be that for you.
