Film Reno Tahoe, a new division of the Reno-Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority, announced today the grand opening of Reno Tahoe Studios, a reimagining of the south end of the 500,000 sq. ft. Reno-Sparks Convention Center.

“Reno Tahoe has a wide variety of cityscapes and outdoor locations that allow Hollywood to recreate almost any location in the world,” said RSCVA President and CEO Christopher Baum. He continued, “With Reno Tahoe Studios offering three clear-span stages of 50,000, 60,000 and 70,000 sq. ft., and numerous production offices and additional spaces, we now have one of the most flexible studios for building interior sets in the country. And the film tax incentive passed this June by the Nevada Legislature finally allows our state to join the race to capture the billions of dollars of movie and television productions that are currently heading to Louisiana, Georgia and other states that have aggressively welcomed the entertainment industry with economic incentives.”

The state’s new “film production incentive,” SB 165, was co-written by Film Reno Tahoe Film Liaison Jeff Spilman, and goes into effect January 1, 2014. Spilman, Baum and the RSCVA’s government affairs firm, Porter, Gordon, Silver, were instrumental in educating legislators about how film production incentives work and why Nevada needed one to capture its fair share of this huge, non-polluting, job-creating industry. Baum and Spilman had previously worked closely together in Michigan, a film incentive state that saw its share of the entertainment industry grow from $6 million to more than $320 million in just two years, creating thousands of high-paying jobs for local citizens – and using tens of thousands of hotel rooms – in the process.

“The film industry is driven by economic incentives,” said Spilman. “Beginning in January, producers will come to Northern Nevada and spend millions of dollars, hiring our workers and doing business with local companies. This would never have happened without the RSCVA’s leadership and hands-on involvement.”

Glenn Gainor, President-Production for the Screen Gems division of Sony Pictures was also on hand for today’s grand opening. Mr. Gainor is on a scout of the Reno Tahoe area, and Reno Tahoe Studios, as a guest of Film Reno Tahoe, as Baum, Spilman and the RSCVA team continue to educate the movie and television production industry on the many benefits of filming in Northern Nevada.
